Saturday

I'm sorry, but I do not know where this pic came from, it was sent by a friend, but I find it hilarious and quite serious, so here it is.

The Tyranny of the "Should"

I have come to hate the word should, and I hate very few things. In med school it is used a lot - I should stop sleeping, cram more, be even more responsible. Is is really impossible to see that to help others one should (!) be as rested as possible, be alert without bitterness and a head full of mental fog? Take it from somebody who knows what burnout is after doing something somebody told her she should (!) do for years and years without listening to her heart. Oh, I hate the word should much more than I should (sorry about the pun).

What if you stop judging yourself by terrible unreachable standards, ones that you would (hopefully) never apply to anyone else? 1) What if you start doing things because they are fair, ethical, right and because doing your best is something you want? What if you listen enough to yourself to rest when you are tired? Maybe then one is sentient enough to see what is necessary, ethical and needs to be done?

Darling Dennis II

Onion & Carrot Soup

Fry an onion, a bunch of spring onions, two leeks and 5 cloves of garlic in good olive or canola oil on low heat until tender. Add a broccoli, enough carrots to fill the casserole, some curry and vegetable stock. Boil until tender. Add precooked white beans. Puree with a blander. Makes a nice yellow soup with an energetic taste. Enjoy!

What Not to Do?

And then I may have become a purist. The weekend has been wonderful, Tønsberg and good friends, long walks, a touch of spring, discussions and sun, but also a feeling of life changing. Of course it does, but it still feels like a surprise. Silly, as change is the only thing I think I can count on.

Anyway, my friend is a master chef, but she cooks meat. I know now I can't eat meat, it contributes to too much suffering and the wrong use of resources. Other people must do what they want, but I can't. As long as I have a choice, I will try my best to avoid meat consumption. My body does not like diary and sugar either, so that pretty much sums it up. It has been educational. Thankfully my friends respect my choices. They are a wonderful bunch.

Shopping Hiatus

I'm trying to get everything sorted. My wardrobe is in all right order, the flat in fairly good shape. Soon it will be possible just to buy food, take ballet class and get supplies for the guinea pigs, work and study. The clutter has been endless and I've spent almost a year sorting it out - on and off that is. The attic still needs attention, but now I have what I need; a house in all right shape, excess clothes and supplies have been given away. It has been an interesting process. I've learnt a lot about what I'm willing to do as well - for myself and in my line of work. House cleaning can be strangely interesting.
